One of the first things you need to know is how to properly hold the camera. The key to holding a camera with stability is to support the camera from the bottom and transfer the weight to the body. Get those elbows in! And breathe.

Here is an excellent video by Joe Mcnally on "Da Grip"

ASSIGNMENT: How Low Can You Go?

Practice your handholding technique. This is not a "one time assignment". With practice and time you should be able to hand hold at slower and slower shutter speeds.

I have actually "hand held" 1200mm at 1/125 of a second with success.
